Two thousand years ago, the Roman proconsul Gaius Iulius Caesar famously uttered the phrase “Veni Vidi Vici”—I came, I saw, I conquered—immortalising the ease and swiftness with which he crushed the rebellious King Pharnaces of Pontus in eloquent tricolon. In the twenty-first century, three young men who share the same passion for the pursuit of truth—however relative it may be— and the same affinity for pretentiousness, seek to emulate the legendary conqueror, not by vanquishing those who do not share our views, but in rejoicing in the multipolarity of modern academia, and transforming this diversity into strength, through which fragments of truth may be uncovered. Like the Roman legions of yore, who combined people of different races, beliefs, and upbringing into one indomitable machine, we wish to do the same with the many fields of study in academia, especially those traditionally viewed as entirely separate, merging them into one so that a new perspective may be gained. “Veni Vidi Veritatem”—I came; I saw the truth.
Michael Li
Greetings, I am Michael Li, an avid student of history, theology, biology, and philosophy. It is both my passion and obsession to dissect the annals of history and uncover from the great mystery a new perspective through which the world could be better understood. My current research examines the relationship between my four fields of interest, in particular how secular events that manifested in the forms of geographical and geopolitical change could reshape the fundamental doctrines of theology and philosophy, which in turn catalyse evolutions of national identity and ideology. Having studied the ancient world extensively, I often seek to construct parallels in history and attain validation in interconnectivity as well as combine traditionally unrelated disciplines in pursuit of new perspectives yet untainted by scholarly prejudice.
It is with both great anticipation and excitement that I commence this blogpost, through which I simply wish to share with a fragment of the world my thoughts and ideas, as crude and unformed as they may be, and articulate the more mature fruits of my labour through words of simplicity and elegance so that kindred spirits may be begotten from shared human experiences.
Geoffrey Yang
I am Geoffrey Yang, and my areas of passion lie within the realms of economics, scientific/medical research, mathematics and technological innovation. While these disciplines explore vastly distinct principles and notions which are all impressive to a significant degree, the interactions of these realms with one another is undoubtedly what truly piques my curiosity. To what extent are the theories of economics applicable in the everyday world? How has the development of technology catalysed the invention, application and further development of scientific/medical R & D?
In this blogpost, I will critically examine the past and present states of these fields, and delve into the many possibilities that the future may hold. I will present my understanding and opinion of these complexities — no matter how significant they may appear — and attempt to express an opinion based on research and facts. I hope that this blogpost is one that informs audiences, ignites discussion, and prompts readers to think; what really happens in the world around us?
Michael Jiang
Hello, I am Michael Jiang, and my current interests are in philosophy, modern history, mathematics and linguistics. As someone who has delved in the twin worlds of humanities and science, I am especially interested in the synthesis of these two areas of study; not only is such a combination of disciplines useful in a modern scholarly context, but is, I personally believe, the ultimate goal of academic research altogether. As such, my current research explores the impact of a historical approach to analysing changes in attitudes towards mathematical truth.
In this blogpost, I will continue to compose observations I have made with regards to my current research, but perhaps the majority of my work here will consist of observations or ideas delving in my areas of interest which I have discovered that are useful, in either a concrete or intellectual sense, or are simply worthy of discussion.
Our Vision
Together, as the co-founders of VVV, we believe that the main purpose of this blogpost is to build an emanative fountain of ideas upon which intellectual and academic discourse can flourish. Whilst we are keen to share the results of our collaborative and individual work, we also hope that such a lively forum can inspire you, whether or not your perspective aligns with ours. History has proven time and time again that it is only through multipolarity, tolerance, and diversity that the frontiers of human knowledge are advanced. May we all contribute to this grand enterprise in our own ways.
